Mourn Baby Mourn

Following the tradition that lamentation is inherently an affair of women, serving to express both the personal and the collective, Mourn Baby Mourn is a choreographic and sound piece functioning in the form of an intimate manifesto. Its foundation is an everyday state of being resembling sadness and frustration so deep that I don’t know where it comes from and if it really belongs to me. During the creative process, I confronted Mark Fisher’s writings and the impasse they created in me. What to say? What to do? I am inspired by gestures that carry a mixture of strength and boredom, a strange cocktail that I often find in popular culture.
Mourn baby mourn is a distress signal, an attempt to escape melancholy by crashing into the wall, with all my strength, decibels and doubts.

Katerina Andreou
was born in Athens and is based in France. She graduated from the Athens School of Law and the Athens National School of Dance, attended the ESSAIS program at the CNDC of Angers, and holds a Master’s degree in choreographic research (Paris 8). As a performer she has notably collaborated with DD Dorvillier, Anne Lise Le Gac, Lenio Kaklea, Bryan Campbell, Dinis Machado, Emmanuelle Huynh, and Ana Rita Teodoro. In her own work she designs a physical praxis specific to each new project and seeks out states of presence that result from a constant negotiation between contrasting or even contradictory tasks, fictions or universes, often challenging the concepts of authority and censorship. She herself creates the sound environment for her pieces which becomes her central dramaturgical tool. She received the Jardin d’Europe award at the ImpulsTanz festival in 2016 for her solo A kind of fierce. She then created the solo BSTRD (2018) and the duet Zeppelin Bend (2021) with Natali Mandila.
